KRISHNAPENS NIB SPECIALITIES

Basic tuning

All fountain pens bought from me will be equipped with a basically tuned nib unless otherwise specified. Nib is inspected for tine alignment and corrected if necessary. All rough patches will be removed. Factory shape of the nib is maintained and no grinding done. Pen will be dip tested and cleaned before shipping.

Feel free in ordering this nib as it will be practically smooth and usable for all general purposes for a casual user of fountain pens. Other exotic grinds may be reserved for enthusiasts, except the Artist’s series which is the basic requirement for an Artist.

1. STANDARD SERIES

SUPER SMOOTH NIB
REGULAR/ LH STANDARD/LEFT OBLIQUE/RIGHT OBLIQUE F/FM/M/B

This is my standard rounded nib tip. There are some natural advantages for a round shaped nib tip. Feeling will be smooth and tolerance to holding angle will be high. That means the user can approach and shade the paper at a variety of angles without extra efforts. Users holding the pen at awkward angles can also prefer this tip. Also most left handed people can also hold this nib very comfortably.

This is recommended for students and who are new to fountain pens, for after getting a hand on this one, they never go back to ball pens!

I have to say that though this nib has good tolerance, some persons may prefer Oblique nibs too. Also the same nib may be specifically made for a Left handed person if he cannot get things right with the usual grind.

You may have to send some pictures of your pen holding angle, taken from different angles or preferably a video. While taking pictures, make sure that pictures are taken by another person while you concentrating on your writing process only. Take pictures not at the start of writing process but only after a while you have started writing.

The nib can be made as Standard, Right Oblique or Left Oblique. Note that once the nib is made as Oblique to your comfortable holding angle, your friend writing with it may not feel right with his hold.

The feeds used will be different for Fine/Fine Medium/ Medium/Broad tips according to the ink requirements of different nibs.

BLUNT NIB

Blunt nib is the one with a blunted tip but with our being over polished so that the feedback from the pen is maintained. It’s not at all rough in any wild imagination! Though I first thought that the Italian brand Aurora is responsible for introducing this grind, later the same was found among some Antique Watermans too.

Though blunted, still the tolerance is reasonably good. The nib is approachable to paper at reasonably good angles to shade the paper for all practical purposes.

Note that rather than Novices the tip is preferred by seasoned FP Writers.

To get the real hang of this nib, prefer a Fine nib. But it can be done with M or B too.

A separate grind for Left handed people is not available. But usually they can use this one comfortably. If not so, just contact me for a suitable custom grind.

2. WRITER’S SERIES

EXTRA FINE
You need Extra fine in some situations like taking side notes. Usually preferred by persons with a lighter hand with pen. Slight feedback may be there which is normal, for an EF nib. Also the ink flow will be adjusted to moderate in order not to increase the line width due to greater ink deposition.

STUB NIB
A stub is an edged tip. You get good line variation with a stub nib while the tolerance of the nib remains high as paper is approached with a good variety of angles to shade it when compared to a true calligraphy nib. This is preferred by a casual writer rather than an Artist

FINE STUB NIB
Made with a Fine nib.
Subtle line variation. Preferred for a regular writing.
Smooth Effect.

MEDIUM STUB NIB
It’s my preferred stub – Made with a Medium nib
Gets good Line variation without compromising writing angles.
(Compared to a True Calligraphy Nib)
Smooth writing effect – Usually tuned for a good flow
Very much recommended for enthusiasts as well as casual writers.

BROAD STUB NIB
The base nib for this type tip is a Broad tipped nib. So more suitable for headlines or side headings.
Gets good line variation with good tolerance – approaches paper with a good variety of angles.
Smooth feeling on paper. Usually a high flow feed is used considering the ink requirements of a Broad nib.

STUBS MAY BE REGULAR / LEFT OBLIQUE/RIGHT OBLIQUE/ CUSTOM

WRITERS CALLIGRAPHY SERIES

WRITER’S CALLIGRAPHY MAY BE REGULAR/LEFT OBLIQUE/RIGHT OBLIQUE/CUSTOM

FINE WRITER’S CALLIGRAPHY NIB
This nib is made with a Medium tipped nib and so runs as wide as a Medium stub nib but with more line variation than it. Still not too broad so that it may be even be used for a daily writing. Writing width corresponds to.75-.8 mm. Tolerance will be better than an equivalent in Artists calligraphy.

MEDIUM WRITER’S CALLIGRAPHY NIB
Takes headings for Topics. This nib is made with a Broad nib. The line width corresponds to .9-1mm. Writing characteristics are same as that of Medium Writer’s Calligraphy except for the width which may be slightly more than what is required for a daily writing. Or recommended more to Artists rather than casual writers.

Note – The Writer’s Calligraphy series may be done as Regular or Oblique – Right or Left. While Regular will be better for most people, Oblique will be preferred by some. If you are not sure please send me picture of your writing angle as mentioned earlier.

3. ARTIST’S SERIES

Our artists clients choice! It comes as tighter Crisp nibs or Rounder Cursive nibs. The later one will be more tolerant in angles. But many prefer the crisper ones due to the tighter lines obtained. May need more practice to get used to. The line width will be running a bit wider than the corresponding nibs in Writer’s series.

FINE ARTIST’S CALLIGRAPHY NIB
Done with a Fine Nib as base

MEDIUM CALLIGRAPHY NIB
Made with a Medium nib as base.

CUTRegular - Left Oblique- Right blique
EDGESCRISP- CURSIVE

BROAD CALLIGRAPHY
Made with Broad nib as base

CUTRegular - Left Oblique- Right blique
EDGESCRISP- CURSIVE

As most of the clients need their specific nibs, the terms used in this category may be rather loose. Many times the nibs may fall into either or none of the groups described above.

When a client wants to use an Indiaink- Fountain pen ink combination, special wide channel feeds are arranged for them. But this do not rule out the use of frequent washing of pens/ nibs!

4. RC SERIES

Now I am proudly presenting the RC series, which is my own specialty series of nibs.
“ RC” is for my master Ramachandran. This series are the topmost among my own grinds of nibs.

RC WA NIB

During the early days, Duncan Cameron created the first Waverly nib, for ultra smooth writing which became very successful and remained in production for more than 100 years.

The nib has slightly upturned tines, curving upwards. Tip is not upturned as its relation with tine remains unaltered.  Writing feel is very smooth. Nib suits any holding position, and particularly good persons by persons holding pen at a higher angle. No need of a separate grind for LH persons though custom grind is also possible in case they are not comfortable.

This nib can be made from Fine / Medium / Broad nibs.

RC Special DUO NIB

This is Special nib starting with any Broad tipped nib as base.  The nib can approach  the paper as  with normal writing angle as Broad corresponding to a line width of .9-1mm. On the flip side, that is on the other side the nib can mark the paper with .3 mm width when the user hold the pen in the opposite direction. And as a bonus, you get a line of medium width with a vertical hold!

This nib can  be done with a Medium nib too.

RC KOT-Stub
This series of nib consists of a special type of stub made for Butter like smooth writing. The contact area is ultra smooth so that this type nib can effortlessly slide through papers at different angles which may not be possible for a conventional stub.
Can be made with F/M/B nibs though may be better made the latter two.
Also this tip can be done as Regular/ Left or Right oblique.

RC MB NIB

Upturned tips are the special for Montblanc company. This type grind are very much used by the company and have earned good reputation for their pens for a smooth writing.  Used by some Japanese nibmiesters  for attaining a smooth effect on their nibs.

The nib can effortlessly glide across papers with least resistance.

The tip can be done on a Fine/Medium/Broad nibs.
